The Dietitians of Canada comments on the book Grain Brain.

The recommendations and claims made by Dr. Perlmutter are not shared by Dietitians of Canada as they are largely based on testimonial rather than scientific evidence. Diets that eliminate gluten, carbohydrates or categories of foods without medical justification or guidance from a Registered Dietitian may put the health of Canadians at risk. Consulting a registered dietitian, before making a dramatic change in diet can lead to better outcomes and prevent unnecessary food costs for families.

Family Business Valuations and Marriage Contracts

Negotiating a marriage contract to treat one particular asset a special way is a common method to protect a business like Jacques’ which was built from scratch with few resources to a successful international organization. Rachel understands and agrees that Jacques’ 50% business interest which he will bring into the marriage belongs to him. But, she asks, what about her advice as an engineer without salary, her contribution as a sounding board 24 / 7, her creation and involvement in regular focus groups to test new product ideas, and all the other works she does without pay? Isn’t that worth something?

Newest Diet Book = Nothing New

In September 2013 the next big diet book hit the shelves. The name of the book is “Grain Brain”. The sub-title, which summarizes the main idea of the book in one sentence, is: “The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers”. The name of the author is Dr. David Perlmutter. The fact which summarizes him in one sentence is: “serves on the Medical Advisory Board of The Dr. Oz Show”. The Dietitians of Canada got so worked up (my description, not theirs) by the release of this book that they formulated an official response and emailed to all 6000 members across the country. Here are their key messages about “Grain Brain”: The recommendations and claims made by Dr. Perlmutter are not shared by Dietitians of Canada as they are largely based on testimonial rather than scientific evidence.  Diets that eliminate gluten, carbohydrates or categories of foods without medical justification or guidance from a Registered Dietitian may put the heal

Baseboards in the Garage, Did You Know?

You may not have considered the baseboards inside your garage. Yet, as you will soon see, these baseboards serve very important functions as well as providing an aesthetic touch. First, let’s begin with a working definition of baseboards so everyone is on the same page here. The baseboard is, in its most general sense, the covering over the lowest part of an interior wall. You may encounter different terms for this wall covering; everything from skirting board, floor molding, or even a mopboard. In most cases the baseboard is constructed of wood, no matter which name is used. In your garage, you will find the baseboard (if there is one installed) at the bottom end of the walls at the floor level. Typically, the baseboard is from 4” to 6” in height. The baseboard in your garage serves a couple of functions. Perhaps the most important function is that of protection. If your baseboard is installed properly, it protects the interior of your garage from foreign invasion.

Betrayal or Good Economic Sense?

For older adults stepping into their second marriages, once the proposal has been accepted, the next conversation is often about the marriage contract. Not so long ago, this discussion would have been a nonstarter or even a deal breaker. Feeling greatly betrayed during this honeymoon phase, a tough discussion about money seemed to come from nowhere. The spouse being asked to sign the agreement for the protection of the other’s property started questioning what was happening.

How to Individualize Sports Nutrition

There can be no doubt that overall; we Homo sapiens are more similar to each other than we are different. However that does not mean that the same nutrition plan is right for everyone. This is particularly true in the field of sports nutrition. Personal nutrition coaching is sure to produce better results than cookie-cutter meal plans. Here are three important factors to consider when customizing a nutrition program for an athlete: His/her health history: This should be the main consideration of any professional working with an athlete. Of course, you don’t need to necessarily tell the athlete that. In fact, when working with a super-dedicated, high-level athlete, trying to sell your plan by playing the “health” card might lose them right off the bat. This is because the prime concern for a super-dedicated, high-level athlete is sports performance – not health. In fact many of them would gladly trade in their health (definitely their short-term health; occasionally even their

How much is a disorganized garage really costing you?

Are you a Have or a Have Not? As you have probably noticed, it’s that time again. Yes, the days are getting shorter, the kids are back in school and it’s time to set up your garage for the winter season. In our many years of helping people organize their garages, we have identified two distinct types of homeowners in our area, the haves and the have nots. In this case, we are talking about homeowners who have taken steps to setup and organize their garages for easy seasonal transitions. These homeowners greet the seasonal change with open arms. They know that seasonal garage setup is not a chore at all, but a simple task that can be completed in a fairly short amount of time. On the other hand, there is the other group of homeowners, those who have not organized their garages. As you might guess, these homeowners warily glance around the inside of their garage.

Leucine: Who can benefit most from this intriguing amino acid?

A group collectively known as the branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine) have garnered a great deal of scientific investigation over the years. This has mostly been because of their unique ability to be used for energy directly by the muscle itself. All protein has the potential to be used for energy however with all other amino acids this involves transport to the liver, conversion to glucose via the metabolic pathway of gluconeogenesis and release back into the blood stream.
