Adult Children in Family Transition

For the teenage child the dissolution of their family affects them more than bearing witness to what is happening. The old Victorian adage of “children should be seen but not heard” is no longer applicable in the 21st century. Young adults often are excluded or ignored as the parents transition from a partnership unit to separate units. A transition whether it is contained as a private family matter or played out publically, the teens are directly and always affected.

Seasonal Tire Storage

It’s that time of year again; time to move your tires in and out. Of course some choose to simply store their seasonal tires at an offsite location. However, a large majority choose to store their tires at home in their garages. At the same time, there are some homeowners who choose to do both, store the set of tires for one vehicle offsite and the tires for a second or third vehicle at home in the garage. This article is for those who choose to utilize their garage space for seasonal tire storage.

Adult Children: Entitled to Child Support Again?

A client whose family matters were resolved nearly a decade ago recently called for a consultation. Enjoying a peaceful empty nest for the past four years, and counting down for a well deserved retirement next spring, he was worried to learn that his eldest daughter lost her job and is asking to come back to live with him. He’s wondering what his financial obligations are to his once independent daughter.

A CORPORATE RETREAT, OR MATRIMONIAL HOME?

When a new client arrived for our initial consultation he seemed sullen and distracted. I asked what he was thinking about. He sighed and explained how he always believed that what was held by his company belonged to the company and what were used by the family were family assets. He had a group of advisers including tax accountants, an executive coach, and others whom he felt were looking out for his best interests. And the part which was troubling him so? He feared that the corporate condominium was really a matrimonial home and he would lose it. How had his two worlds collided when he separated from his spouse?

Garage Renovation Obstacles

With any garage renovation project it is fairly common to encounter situations that require a bit of creativity in order to set up the best storage solutions. These situations can be broadly classified into two main categories: those that involve movable objects or materials and those situations when it becomes necessary to work around appliances or other fixtures that are for the most part not readily movable. As you might expect, situations involving movable storage obstacles are fairly straightforward to address. On the other hand, storage obstacles arising from immovable storage solution obstacles need a bit more creativity and planning. However, as you will soon see there are options available for both.

Joint Ownership of Property with Children

Some parents who may be sole owners of a house or cottage are considering sharing the ownership with their young child. While there may be sentimental or economic reasons for doing so, care must be taken to understand the full consequences of such a decision. Important ramifications such as loss of tax credits for both the parent and child should be discussed with a tax lawyer or accountant. If the parent is considering protecting assets in the midst of a separation, raise the consideration with your family law lawyer. Below are the definitions of two common forms of land ownership to keep in mind when learning about some of the pros and cons of taking the step to change land ownership.

The Dietitians of Canada comments on the book Grain Brain.

The recommendations and claims made by Dr. Perlmutter are not shared by Dietitians of Canada as they are largely based on testimonial rather than scientific evidence. Diets that eliminate gluten, carbohydrates or categories of foods without medical justification or guidance from a Registered Dietitian may put the health of Canadians at risk. Consulting a registered dietitian, before making a dramatic change in diet can lead to better outcomes and prevent unnecessary food costs for families.

Family Business Valuations and Marriage Contracts

Negotiating a marriage contract to treat one particular asset a special way is a common method to protect a business like Jacques’ which was built from scratch with few resources to a successful international organization. Rachel understands and agrees that Jacques’ 50% business interest which he will bring into the marriage belongs to him. But, she asks, what about her advice as an engineer without salary, her contribution as a sounding board 24 / 7, her creation and involvement in regular focus groups to test new product ideas, and all the other works she does without pay? Isn’t that worth something?

Newest Diet Book = Nothing New

In September 2013 the next big diet book hit the shelves. The name of the book is “Grain Brain”. The sub-title, which summarizes the main idea of the book in one sentence, is: “The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers”. The name of the author is Dr. David Perlmutter. The fact which summarizes him in one sentence is: “serves on the Medical Advisory Board of The Dr. Oz Show”. The Dietitians of Canada got so worked up (my description, not theirs) by the release of this book that they formulated an official response and emailed to all 6000 members across the country. Here are their key messages about “Grain Brain”: The recommendations and claims made by Dr. Perlmutter are not shared by Dietitians of Canada as they are largely based on testimonial rather than scientific evidence.  Diets that eliminate gluten, carbohydrates or categories of foods without medical justification or guidance from a Registered Dietitian may put the heal

Baseboards in the Garage, Did You Know?

You may not have considered the baseboards inside your garage. Yet, as you will soon see, these baseboards serve very important functions as well as providing an aesthetic touch. First, let’s begin with a working definition of baseboards so everyone is on the same page here. The baseboard is, in its most general sense, the covering over the lowest part of an interior wall. You may encounter different terms for this wall covering; everything from skirting board, floor molding, or even a mopboard. In most cases the baseboard is constructed of wood, no matter which name is used. In your garage, you will find the baseboard (if there is one installed) at the bottom end of the walls at the floor level. Typically, the baseboard is from 4” to 6” in height. The baseboard in your garage serves a couple of functions. Perhaps the most important function is that of protection. If your baseboard is installed properly, it protects the interior of your garage from foreign invasion.

Betrayal or Good Economic Sense?

For older adults stepping into their second marriages, once the proposal has been accepted, the next conversation is often about the marriage contract. Not so long ago, this discussion would have been a nonstarter or even a deal breaker. Feeling greatly betrayed during this honeymoon phase, a tough discussion about money seemed to come from nowhere. The spouse being asked to sign the agreement for the protection of the other’s property started questioning what was happening.

How to Individualize Sports Nutrition

There can be no doubt that overall; we Homo sapiens are more similar to each other than we are different. However that does not mean that the same nutrition plan is right for everyone. This is particularly true in the field of sports nutrition. Personal nutrition coaching is sure to produce better results than cookie-cutter meal plans. Here are three important factors to consider when customizing a nutrition program for an athlete: His/her health history: This should be the main consideration of any professional working with an athlete. Of course, you don’t need to necessarily tell the athlete that. In fact, when working with a super-dedicated, high-level athlete, trying to sell your plan by playing the “health” card might lose them right off the bat. This is because the prime concern for a super-dedicated, high-level athlete is sports performance – not health. In fact many of them would gladly trade in their health (definitely their short-term health; occasionally even their

How much is a disorganized garage really costing you?

Are you a Have or a Have Not? As you have probably noticed, it’s that time again. Yes, the days are getting shorter, the kids are back in school and it’s time to set up your garage for the winter season. In our many years of helping people organize their garages, we have identified two distinct types of homeowners in our area, the haves and the have nots. In this case, we are talking about homeowners who have taken steps to setup and organize their garages for easy seasonal transitions. These homeowners greet the seasonal change with open arms. They know that seasonal garage setup is not a chore at all, but a simple task that can be completed in a fairly short amount of time. On the other hand, there is the other group of homeowners, those who have not organized their garages. As you might guess, these homeowners warily glance around the inside of their garage.

Leucine: Who can benefit most from this intriguing amino acid?

A group collectively known as the branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine) have garnered a great deal of scientific investigation over the years. This has mostly been because of their unique ability to be used for energy directly by the muscle itself. All protein has the potential to be used for energy however with all other amino acids this involves transport to the liver, conversion to glucose via the metabolic pathway of gluconeogenesis and release back into the blood stream.

All protein has the potential to be used for energy however with all other amino acids this involves transport to the liver, conversion to glucose via the metabolic pathway of gluconeogenesis and release back into the blood stream. Because of their ability it has been theorized that branched chain amino acids maybe a helpful fuel during exercise (particularly endurance exercise). Unfortunately, actual studies have not yielded consistent results and in fact, most have shown little or no positive effect of ingesting branched chain amino acids on endurance performance. However one of the branched chain amino acids has been distinguishing itself from the others – and for a reason unrelated to energy metabolism. Leucine h

Nutrition & Genetics - Gene or Epigenome

Does you DNA equal your nutritional destiny? John Cloud tells us that scientists have actually known about epigenetics since at least the 1970s. But until the late ’90s, epigenetic phenomena were regarded as a sideshow to the main event, DNA. Essentially epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that do not involve alterations to the genetic code itself. So the same genes remain, but something is telling them whether or not they should “fire”, so to speak – some outside force is telling them to switch on or off. The changes are governed by the cellular material called the epigenome that sits just on top of the genome (hence the prefix epi which means above). Learn what can influence your dietary & nutritional response to the food you eat.

Professional Storage Solutions – Slatwall Organization Systems

Professional grade slatwall stores a lot more tools & sports equipment safely per square foot of wall space. Because the more durable materials of professional grade slatwall, nicks and other damages do not become an issue. Also, camlock hooks are the key to getting maximum value out of slatwall storage making seasonal changes to your wall storage arrangement easy to do. In addition, camlock hooks, baskets and shelves means that the slatwall can hold more weight per hook, basket or shelving accessory. In fact, with a camlock hook, you can store something as heavy as a gas or electric lawn mower. Surprising, isn't it? Visit my site and contact me if you'd like to see real life examples.

When does nutrition during physical activity become important?

I need things to be kept as simply as possible. And I am not ashamed of it. In my dealings with the world of nutrition this often becomes a problem for me. As Beth Mansfield, one of Canada’s leading sports dietitians, has been known to quip: “Nutrition is not rocket science… it’s much more complicated”. That’s why I’m relatively proud of myself (if I may say so) for coming up with the following table whose purpose is to answer the question as to whether or not a person needs to be concerned about nutrition during his/her physical activity.

What is it that Professional Garage Designers Do?

If you’ve ever undertaken a large renovation job in your home, such as the kitchen, bathroom or basement, it’s likely you’ve hired a professional to do the job. Usually only the die-hard do-it-yourselfer with a lot of experience will tackle that type of project. But when it comes to the garage, many people think a few tools and a trip to the big-box store to pick up some simple shelving, cabinets and maybe an epoxy floor coating will do. There’s nothing wrong with what they sell there, but the problem is it’s likely not going to stand up to the test of time and use.

Why Hitting Should Be Banned in Hockey

I think open ice bodychecking should be banned from all hockey from novice to the NHL. I just can’t find justification to keep hitting or body checking in hockey. Physicality adds a unique and appealing dimension to the sport however it doesn't provide enough positives to outweigh the negatives, specifically concussions, injuries to human brains. Banning the body check makes sense for the health of the players as much as the sport of hockey.
